Meeting Description:

The Canadian Society for the Study of Names (CSSN) will hold its 58th Annual Meeting at McGill University from Saturday, June 15 to Sunday, June 16, 2024, in conjunction with the Congress of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences of Canada (FHSS).The general theme of the 2024 FHSS Congress is: “Sustaining shared futures,” while CSSN’s own theme is “Naming in our World”, but papers on any onomastic or toponymic topic are welcome. Remote presentations are also accepted.

Call for Papers:

Papers on any onomastic or toponymic topic will be welcome, regardless of the field of research or interest: linguistics, history, geography, economics and literature to name a few. The scope of the programme is not limited to Canadian subjects; rather diversity and originality in topic and provenance are always well appreciated.

Of particular interest are themes of concern still en vogue within present societies but (not limited to): diachrony, ubiquity, and evolution of denominations; Indigenous (re)naming modes; official policies and norms for naming; self-identification vs. civil status registration; critical trends in changing names; bi- or multi-lingual strata in place names; exonym vs. xenonym; genealogy; onomastics in literature; trademarks; microtoponymy and cultural toponymy; toponymy in education; and toponymy in support of UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Authors are encouraged to present their subject with clear research methods and outcomes. Presentations are allotted 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for questions, discussion, and even debate. Presenters need not be a current CSSN member to submit an abstract, but at the time of acceptance of their paper, they must become a member in order
to be included in the programme and to register for the Congress. Those who cannot attend in person will have the opportunity to present online, on the condition of sending their presentation file in advance by the end of May (details to come).

Information about membership is available at: https://ojs.lib.uwo.ca/index.php/oc/cssn-sco-about.
