There is a lively tradition of work on syntactic change in sociolinguistics, and another lively tradition of work on syntactic change in historical corpus linguistics. At present, however, theorizing in the two traditions has proceeded in relative isolation. Recent years have also seen a surge in theoretically-informed work on dialect syntax, adding another dimension to the picture. This workshop – a one-day event attached to the Diachronic Generative Syntax conference – aims to stimulate dialogue and explore points of convergence and divergence between these different approaches. Invited speakers are Sali Tagliamonte (Toronto) and David Willis (Cambridge).

Call for Papers:

The Workshop on Syntactic Change in Progress is now accepting submissions for oral and poster presentations! We welcome submissions from anyone working on syntactic change, regardless of whether they identify as a sociolinguist, a historical linguist, a corpus linguist, a syntactic theorist, or anything else. Any theoretically-informed work on syntactic change in progress is welcome: although the workshop is attached to the Diachronic Generative Syntax conference, submissions for this workshop are emphatically not required to take a generative perspective in any sense, although they may.

Abstracts should be no longer than two A4 pages (minimum font size: 12pt), including examples and references.
