The aim of this conference is to convene scholars interested in the interaction between early Indo-European speaking peoples and the climate and weather in their environment. We welcome papers from those interested in examining this question from the perspective of historical linguistics, mythology/religion, poetics, and/or archaeology.

The aim of this conference is to convene scholars interested in the interaction between early Indo-European speaking peoples and the climate and weather in their environment.

The conference will be held on Friday & Saturday, November 10-11, at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, located within the South Campus of the University of Copenhagen. Remote participation via Zoom is also possible.

The conference will feature the following keynote speakers:

David W. Anthony (Hartwick College)
Martine Robbeets (Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology)

Scholars at any stage of their career are invited to submit an abstract dealing with linguistic reconstruction of the Indo-European climate and weather-related lexicon, phraseology, myth and religion. We welcome papers from those interested in examining this question from the perspective of historical linguistics, mythology/religion, poetics, and/or archaeology. A period of twenty minutes will be allotted for each paper, followed by a ten-minute discussion period. Abstracts should be no longer than 600 words and should be anonymous. They should indicate the precise topic to be dealt with, the author’s contribution to the topic and the author’s specific conclusions.

Abstracts must be received by June 15, 2023.

They should be sent via email as an attached PDF to Julia Sturm at ie.weather.cph@gmail.com and julia.sturm@hum.ku.dk.

Successful candidates will be notified shortly after the deadline and will be invited to submit a revised version of their abstracts by October 1, 2023. These revised abstracts will be posted online. A peer-reviewed publication is planned for selected papers.
