Meeting Description:
The V International Congress of Historical Linguistics: Diachronic Constellations (V CILH) in honor of Professors Charlotte Galves and Mary Kato will be held from 19 to 23 July 2021 as an online event, with some solemn activities taking place at the State University of Campinas – UNICAMP.
Traditionally, editions of the CILH pay tribute to renowned researchers in the field whose work contributes to the building and innovation in concepts and methods related to Historical Linguistics. The V CILH: Diachronic constellations continues this tradition and, in this edition, honors professors Charlotte Galves and Mary Kato, who were the founders and diffusers in the area of Historical Linguistics in Brazil. Galves and Kato worked on formal diachronic syntax: the first with strong interaction with the areas of corpus linguistics and on the interface between syntax and prosody; and the second in interface with sociolinguistics and studies on language acquisition. “Navigation” and “travel” are metaphors present in the work of the honorees, and in line with their legacy, the V CILH: Diachronic constellations aims to navigate in this legacy by offering a space for qualified debate on linguistic phenomena related to linguistic change and the variability of languages; at the same time, it seeks to value the memory of the work of these important researchers for the new generations of researchers from Brazil and beyond. To this end, the event will feature: conferences, short courses, homage sessions, workshop sessions covering different areas of linguistics and philology, as well as general sessions and poster sessions.
Ana Maria Martins (University of Lisbon), Ataliba de Castilho (University of São Paulo), Francisco Dubert-Garcia (University of Santiago de Compostela), Ian Gareth Roberts (University of Cambridge), Liliana Coragem Inverno (University of Coimbra) and Pierre Swiggers (Ku Leuven) will participate in the event, together with other renowned researchers.
The V International Congress of Historical Linguistics: Diachronic Constellations (V CILH) is a realization of the Institute for Language Studies (IEL/Unicamp) in partnership with graduate programs in Linguistics in different Brazilian Universities – UFMG, UESB, UEFS, UFBA and USP.
