Post-doc job opportunities in Medieval French Syntax
I am pleased to announce the funding by the ANR and the DFG of the research project “Micro-cues of language evolution: A Multifactorial model of V2 loss in Central Romance”, to be hosted by the Université de Caen Normandie and the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. The objective of the project is to determine and explain the factors that lead to the loss of V2 word order in Normandy French and Veneto Italian from the earliest documented period to the 1550s. It compares results from investigating data calibrated by text type in order to delineate the ordinary competence of speakers through time and bring to light mechanisms of language change.
As part of this project, the Université de Caen Normandie site is recruiting two researchers at post-doctoral level. Prior training in historical linguistics, knowledge of medieval French, familiarity with syntactic analysis and an ability to function in English in an international environment are required. Skills in either paleography, digital humanities, statistical analysis or formal syntactic theory would be desirable, as is open-mindedness, a willingness to learn new skills and an ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team. Start date is likely to be June 1st 2021, for a duration of 3 years.
The first post is the full-time Project Manager (PM), who oversees the operational conduct of the project by weekly meetings with the two Post-Doctoral researchers and monthly reports to the PIs, identifies unforeseen operational challenges and suggested resolutions. The PM also ensures the visibility of the project and its deliverables, including through the broadcasting package for which they are primarily in charge. They also contribute directly to the research programme.
The second is that of the Post-Doctoral researcher, who supports the conceptual and methodological advances of the project. Their role is to aid the constitution of resources and tools, help identify quantitative and qualitative patterns of evolution for V2 and co-dependent factors and help in the formulation of causal scenarios and the assessment of general principles.
The interested candidates should send me a cv and a cover letter by email no later than December 14 2020.
