Meeting Description:

Recursivity is assumed to be a central property of linguistic structure, most central in syntactic structure. Recursive constituent structure is however also found in phonology. In prosodic phonology, a hierarchy of a limited set of prosodic constituents is assumed. In early days, the strict layering of these constituents was assumed such that each layer dominates the constituent(s) of the next higher level starting from the syllable – the metrical foot – the phonological word – the phonological phrase – the intonational phrase – the utterance (Nespor & Vogel, 1986). Within prosodic phonology, there is a debate on how recursivity is best be modelled. Strict-layering on the one hand, alignment of syntactic and prosodic constituents, or most recent, match of syntactic and prosodic constituents in combination with phonological well-formedness (Selkirk 2011). The latter approach assumes recursive prosodic structure of the form of maximal, non-maximal and minimal prosodic constituents (Itô & Mester, 2012).

This workshop is about recursive higher-ordered prosodic categories, in particular phrasal prosodic categories. The aim of this workshop on “Recursivity in Phrasal Phonology” is to bring together researchers working on issues on phrasal phonology to discuss new developments with respect to recursivity. The workshop will discuss new theoretical or empirical developments with respect to phrasal phonology above the word. The aim is to discuss current issues on syntactic and phonological constituency above the word from both syntactic perspectives and phonological perspectives based on samples from various languages.

Call for Papers:

We welcome contributions on any aspect related to the workshop theme ‘Recursivity in Phrasal Phonology’. We also encourage junior researchers to submit their work. We welcome both paper and poster presentations. Length of presentations is 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
Abstracts should not exceed one page (Time New Roman 12 pt, 2.5 margin) with an additional page for references, linguistic examples and/or tables and figures. Abstract and paper submission will be handled via the EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=recphras2020) platform.
